ST. PAUL, MN — Red House Records is very pleased to announce that they have signed Michigan songwriter Drew Nelson to its award-winning roster. An artist with an international reputation and several critically acclaimed albums under his belt, the folk/Americana singer is excited to be a part of the Grammy-winning indie label, joining an illustrious list of artists that includes veterans like John Gorka, Hot Tuna, Lucy Kaplansky and Dale Watson as well as younger Billboard-charting bands like The Wailin’ Jennys and Storyhill.

“Red House Records is a company apart,” Drew says. “They not only believe in art but they also believe in artists. I am so honored to be included in the Red House family.”

Drew’s Red House debut Tilt-A-Whirl will come out in early 2012. He can also be heard on the new album Dark River: Songs of the Civil War Era, along with Jon Dee Graham, Slaid Cleaves, James McMurtry and new label-mate Eliza Gilkyson.

The Laws join the roster

It’s not surprising John and Michele Law kick off their sixth album, Try Love, with the line ‘I believe in love at first sight,’ as the album marks The Laws’ 10 years and one million miles on the road as a couple. “It was actually love at first height,” they kid. The song is also the perfect introduction to the grassy folk-duo’s essence, “we are a happy positive couple and we love playing music together” — which they’ve been doing since releasing their first album 2000 and ambitiously touring over 200 dates a year both in the US and Canada. The couple recorded their tight harmony singing in one take with producer J.P. Cormier, whose musicianship embellished the songs of Waylon Jennings, Marty Stuart, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Charlie Louvin and Vince Gill on recordings as well as on the Grand Ole Opry stage.

In 2007 they became first Canadians to win Merlefest’s Chris Austin Songwriting Contest, a launching pad for previous winners Gillian Welch and Tift Merritt. As well, the duo were inspired to see their heroes play live – John, was struck by Doc Watson’s picking, and Michele started playing electric bass after hearing T. Michael Coleman with the Seldom Scene – and brought those inspirations to Try Love.

Also in 2007, they released their most successful album Ride It Out produced by hit songwriter Regie Hamm, and they became quickly known as the best duo out of Canada since Ian and Sylvia. “Their vocal harmonies recall the Everly Brothers in their prime. Yes, the harmonies are really that good,” said Music Row Magazine. While The Tennessean said their voices were “a deeply affecting blend that harks back to the impeccable like of Davis Sisters and Delmore Brothers.” The success of the record led to a songwriting deal and a feature on the PBS series, “Legends and Lyrics.”

The Laws share another one of their joys with their fans — bringing cooking on the road with them with some shows that are one part cooking workshop and one part music. They have released one cookbook, and have appeared on numerous cooking shows, and featured on Canada’s top entertainment show.

The Barefoot Movement joins the roster

The Barefoot Movement is a trio of immensely talented musicians from North Carolina and Tennessee whose music successfully melds Americana influences with the invigoration of acoustic modern rock and jazz. Their sound simultaneously captures the rustic beauty of old Southern front porch Bluegrass improvisation while being immediately accessible to the modern era.

The group was initially formed when Noah Wall, singer and fiddler, and Tommy Norris, mandolin player, attended high school together in their home county of Granville, NC and began setting Noah’s lyrics to Tommy’s chords. Though the band was threatened when the two members left to attend colleges in different states, it was while Noah was a student of the Bluegrass, Old-Time, and Country Music Program at Eastern Tennessee State University that she met Quentin Acres, when both were chosen to perform for the Old-Time Pride Band. The three soon united to form The Barefoot Movement. The name evolved from Noah’s tendency to remove her shoes during shows, a testament to the relaxed atmosphere and down-home stylings of the group.

This evolution of sound can be heard in their latest record “Footwork,” a polished opus showcasing the group’s maturation and talent. Noah’s voice is subtly piercing while displaying a remarkable range, from the toe-tapping, barn-raising Calico Jack to the melodic, nostalgic Tobacco Road. Barefoot Movement’s newest album is nothing short of addictive. Embedded in each track are compelling visual evocations, complex tonal twists, and a downright good time.

The trio has performed at Bristol Rhythm & Roots, FloydFest and is slated to appear at the 2012 John Hartford Memorial Festival.

Angela Easterling joins the roster

Greenville, SC based singer/songwriter Angela Easterling’s songwriting has made her a two-time Kerrville New Folk Finalist and a 2011 Telluride Troubadour Finalist, and has roped in critical lauding from Oxford American, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Boston Herald, a prolific interview with NPR’s Bob Edwards, and heavy airplay on Sirius XM’s Outlaw Country. Her new CD, Beguiler, is making waves at Americana radio.

Beguiler is Easterling’s first album featuring her band, The Beguilers (Brandon Turner and Jeff Hook). It was produced by lauded singer-songwriter Will Kimbrough, currently serving as Emmylou Harris’ lead guitarist and known for his work with folks like Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider and Jimmy Buffett. Also helping out in the studio are bassist Byron House, from Robert Plant’s Band of Joy and noted multi-instrumentalist Fats Kaplin.

Roger McGuinn, founder of legendary folk rock group The Byrds, has called her “a bright shining star on the horizon,” going on to say “Her gift is so special….brought me back to the time the Byrds recorded Sweetheart of the Rodeo – tradition meets youthful exuberance.”

Chicago Acoustic Underground

Eager to create more opportunities for musicians and utilize “new” technology like podcasts, Michael Teach founded Chicago Acoustic Underground, along with Jacob Covington and Michael Narvaez.

Chicago Acoustic Underground podcasts are created with a radio-show format, providing close-up interviews with singer-songwriters and their music. A “podcast” is similar to a radio “broadcast”, except the podcast is available online and can be listened to on any MP3 player or iPod. Each episode is recorded live at the CAU studio in Chicago. The studio puts musicians at ease with windows overlooking Armitage Avenue. Inside, it’s decorated with house plants, music memorabilia and a wide collection of guitars and hand percussion- not to mention a bright yellow, mint-condition drum set.

ellen cherry wins Michael Terry People’s Choice Award at Wildflower! festival
